SSL Bus Comp Classic: five decades of analogue compression sound, reimagined

For more than five decades, the SSL Stereo Bus Compressor has established itself as a benchmark in recording studios, thanks to its distinctive response and its ability to bring impact, dynamic control and cohesion to countless music productions.

Now, Solid State Logic (SSL) brings back its classic design in a dedicated 1U format with the new Bus Comp Classic, retaining its straightforward, precise workflow while introducing Variable VCA Drive, a new continuously variable control that provides immediate access to the sonic characteristics of different generations of SSL consoles.

Bus Comp Classic brings back the essential elements of the original SSL bus compressor. Its architecture incorporates high-performance THAT 2181 VCAs in the audio path, combined with SSL's distinctive side-chain topology, which places a VCA within its feedback loop.

This combination delivers the dynamic, musical response that has made the SSL Bus Compressor a staple of recording studios. Transients retain their definition while remaining under control, as the different elements of the mix begin to breathe and evolve together.

Selected Ratio and Release options, precision stepped controls and a true external stereo side-chain input expand its creative and operational possibilities without compromising the immediacy of the classic design.

Different generations of SSL in a single classic bus compressor

The new Variable VCA Drive control brings decades of SSL console sonic character together in a single continuously variable parameter.

When disengaged, the processor delivers the low-distortion clarity and powerful transient response associated with SSL's SuperAnalogue™ technology, found in consoles such as the 9000 Series and Duality.

As the control is increased, it progressively introduces the characteristic harmonic coloration of the FX384 and classic 4000 Series consoles.

From the subtle harmonic richness of analogue consoles to aggressive saturation approaching 10% total harmonic distortion (THD), producers and engineers can precisely determine the degree of transparency, coloration or sonic aggression they want to achieve with Bus Comp Classic.

Classic control and enhanced musicality

Bus Comp Classic retains SSL's characteristic hands-on workflow, with precision stepped controls for Ratio, Attack, Release and S/C HPF, enabling fast operation, accurate manual recall of settings and repeatable results.

From the gentle soft-knee compression response of its renowned 2:1 ratio to more aggressive processing of drums, stems and parallel processing chains, each setting delivers a clearly defined dynamic and musical response.

The programme-dependent SSL Auto Release function naturally adapts the release time to the audio material, preserving movement and dynamic detail as the production evolves.

A six-position high-pass filter in the side-chain circuit helps preserve the depth and impact of the kick drum and low frequencies, while the external stereo side-chain input enables more advanced workflows for both creative processing and deliverable preparation.

By feeding the full mix into the detector circuit while processing individual stems separately, engineers can more closely preserve the gain reduction behaviour and dynamic intent established in the original mix, even when creating alternative versions and different deliverables.
