Acoustic innovation: GIK Acoustics transforms studios with modular technology

GIK Acoustics presents new research at the 159th AES Convention in Long Beach, California, showcasing an innovative approach to high-end acoustic design.

James Lindenschmidt, GIK’s Vice President of Acoustic Design, will deliver the presentation Modular, Shippable Acoustic Treatments for High-End Mastering Rooms: A Case Study with Adam Ayan. The white paper examines a modern solution to the long-standing challenge of achieving world-class acoustic performance without the need for permanent construction.

For decades, mastering studios have relied on fixed architectural treatments integrated into the very structure of the room. While this approach can deliver exceptional results, it also limits engineers to a single configuration and location.

 

As workflows evolve and hybrid or mobile environments become the norm, studios are seeking greater flexibility without compromising quality. This principle inspired GIK Acoustics’ modular design philosophy, which Lindenschmidt’s paper explores in depth through a collaboration with Grammy Award-winning mastering engineer Adam Ayan.

Using GIK’s Sound Block system, Ayan Mastering achieved acoustic results that not only matched but surpassed his previous fixed-architecture facility at Gateway Mastering, while maintaining a fully modular, mobile, and globally shippable design.

 

This project clearly demonstrates that modular does not mean compromise. With the right engineering, modular systems can equal or even outperform traditional construction, while giving engineers the freedom to adapt their spaces as formats and technologies evolve, says Lindenschmidt.

 

GIK ADAM AYAN 3 HIDuring the AES session, Lindenschmidt presents the design and build process of Ayan Mastering, showcasing comparative spectrogram data between the new modular room and the original Gateway facility.

The results reveal tighter low-frequency control, more consistent decay times, and a smoother overall response — all achieved with modular broadband acoustic treatments manufactured off-site and assembled anywhere in the world. This research marks a key step forward in the evolution of modern studio design.
