As the dance music community makes its annual pilgrimage to Ibiza for the season's inaugural event, the International Music Summit (IMS), AlphaTheta Corporation is proud to announce that Mark Grotefeld, the Head of Marketing for EMEA, delivered this year’s inspiring opening keynote address at IMS Ibiza 2024."
With the title AlphaTheta and One Through Music: A company’s Search for Meaning, the keynote offered a candid look from the inside of the company at its evolution over recent years, shifting from a profit-driven organisation to a purpose-driven one.
At IMS Ibiza, Mark talked about what ‘purpose’ means for businesses and organisations, and why it’s so important.
Being invited to deliver the keynote address is a huge honor for both Mark and AlphaTheta, the company that was a founding partner of IMS 17 years ago, especially as the event coincides with the 30th anniversary of the first CDJ’s release. During those 30 years, the Pioneer DJ brand grew from a seed of an idea – when a product engineer realized that Pioneer’s car stereo anti-vibration CD platter could be used to make CD decks stable enough for use in DJ booths – and ultimately pave the way for a new era of DJing.
When the Pioneer DJ brand was sold to private equity firm KKR in 2015, the new company Pioneer DJ Ltd was driven to achieve one goal: increase profitability. But when the business was sold again in 2020, its new owner Noritsu was committed to a fresh philosophy that values people and purpose more than profit. The company was renamed AlphaTheta, which means “flow”, i.e., the optimal state of human performance.
In his IMS keynote, Mark explained how, under Noritsu, AlphaTheta is evolving to define itself by “why” and not “what”, and how the motto One Through Music forms the basis of everything the company does. From supporting its employees and customers, and starting initiatives such as Start from Scratch, to working with other purpose-led organizations including Bridges for Music, AlphaTheta strives to inspire positive change. But this keynote didn't offer solutions. AlphaTheta doesn’t claim to have all the answers about how a business can achieve purpose. Mark discussed how the company is on a journey and is keen to contribute to conversations and spark ideas about how individuals can be the ones to instigate changes in their organizations, and how organizations can do the same within the wider industry.
After all – as we discovered when an engineer spotted an alternative use for a certain CD player component – if a tiny seed of an idea is properly nurtured, it can grow to become something that revolutionizes an entire industry.

Notable highlights from the keynote
“We’ve learnt that purpose-centric cultures require a different style of leadership: More conscious, more compassionate, value-centred. And with that comes a flattening of hierarchy where leaders need to inspire, to serve… not simply “manage and instruct”. It’s work in progress…”
The best time to plant an oak tree is 30 years ago. But the second-best time is now. Over the years, we’ve learnt that purpose is not something we actually ever achieve. That’s not the point. It’s something we orient our company, ourselves towards. It’s about orientation. And then committing to the process.
On Bridges for Music, In Place of War, A Greener Future, Earth Percent, and Last Night a DJ Saved My Life:
“Good organisations (such as these), with conscious leadership, are agents of positive change in our industry. We, AlphaTheta, are inspired by their servant leadership. We see their service. We see their selflessness. It humbles us. We can all learn from it. They all use music as a tool for transformation. How beautiful is that?”
