In our March issue we brought you our line array special... Since we at ISP Música don't want you to be left with any doubts about the line arrays we presented earlier, this month we take a closer look at dB Technologies' most cutting-edge and powerful systems. This way, we bring within your reach the most suitable gear for delivering the best kind of sound coverage at all kinds of events. Because sometimes audio is a matter of height...

1. DVA T12 - 12"/6.5"/1" Line Array Module - 1500W

What is the DVA T12?

The DVA-T12 is a step forward in the evolution of the successful DVA T4 line array system. Although it offers more power and has a greater range, its active three-way design makes it as easy to set up and install as its predecessor.

The DVA T12 features the latest in neodymium speaker technology and high-performance digital amplifiers, with a total output power of 1500W. Combined with a DSP located at the top of the enclosure and top-quality AD-DA converters, it delivers a high-definition sound image with enormous SPL for reinforcement in large sound installations.

Weighing just 29 kg, this extraordinary compact enclosure, with its unobtrusive design, makes setup easy in applications that need sound reinforcement requiring high power and high performance.

Why is it a safe system?

The DVA T12 is an active enclosure equipped with the latest technology to achieve the greatest possible safety, efficiency and acoustic performance. A second power supply powers five controllers and the DSP, and also serves to improve the monitoring routines and the main power system. The intelligent IPOS™ (Intelligent Power-On Sequence) circuit controls the progressive power-up sequence of the main power supply of all DVA T12 units in the array. It staggers the power-up time progressively to keep the system's inrush current low. The 1500W SMPS power supply feeds the amplifiers; thanks to its PFC (Active Power Factor Correction) capability, the system can work perfectly between 90 and 265 VAC without manual adjustments, delivering maximum performance on dynamic peaks even when the mains voltage is poor, for example when power drops at concerts due to voltage sags in the grid. This is another area where digipro® outperforms conventional amplifiers. With over 90% efficiency, it's so efficient that it doesn't need fans, making it a safe and completely maintenance-free amplifier.

Integrated LDN for maximum reliability

Reliability is a priority in modern amplification systems. That's why the DVA T12 comes with a fast, efficient local data network (LDN), comprising one main CPU and four auxiliary CPUs. Each microprocessor manages its assigned component independently and continuously, for example the high-frequency (HF) amplifier, process temperature, operating voltage, current, input and output impedance and other data.

The main CPU captures and evaluates the data streams from the auxiliary CPUs in real time, detecting problems such as an internal fault in a power amplifier channel or in a speaker. Only the affected channel is muted, to avoid noise. Temperature is monitored constantly. The power amplifier doesn't shut down if the temperature rises above the defined limit; instead, the input level is attenuated in small increments according to the temperature, to allow the amplifier to cool down.

The main CPU monitors the operating status, storing this data in a log file that can be exported via the USB port on the rear panel. If RDnet is running, the T12 even sends an error report to the PC, which considerably speeds up and simplifies maintenance of the module.

Excellent, authentic dynamic range

The signal processor and the AD/DA converter were designed specifically for the DVA T12, in order to achieve an authentic, quality sound with wide dynamic headroom. To this end, the enclosure features a dynamic range of 136 dB with 56-bit signal processing and a 96 kHz sampling rate.

The DSP offers great signal processing capabilities. Its tools include crossovers located at the top of the enclosure with adjustable slopes and all the EQ functions needed to enhance the signal. It adjusts phase and timing, with digital peak and RMS limiting, as well as thermal protection, for maximum dynamic output level and safe operation even in the most demanding conditions.

Easy to set up at the touch of a button

The DVA T12's DSP offers eight system presets that adapt the unit to its assigned role in the array. It readjusts the gain and EQ for short-, medium- and long-throw positions to compensate for the high frequencies absorbed by the air, also coupling the low and mid frequencies according to the length of the array, with no manual adjustments needed.

All the presets can be selected using the rotary switch mounted on the back or from a PC, using the RDnet software.

RDnet for remote network control and monitoring

Thanks to its factory-fitted RDnet port, the DVA T12 is ready to be integrated into complex, remotely controlled sound reinforcement systems. The RJ45 inputs/outputs connect it to the RDnet hub. With its technology, the RDnet link lets you adjust presets, levels and any other key system parameter from wherever the FOH is located.

The control engineer receives data on temperature, limiter status, levels and all operating parameters on the PC in real time. The RDnet HUB interfaces connect to the PC via LAN, WLAN or USB. All the necessary settings for the individual DVA T12 modules can be made offline while planning the sound reinforcement system. Once the system is installed, the stored program can be recalled. Very often, in large installations, the system parameters have to be adapted on the fly to meet the expectations of the event. Some areas that don't require as much coverage or need a different kind of performance may require different settings, and the system can easily be adapted at any time via RDnet.

The DVA T12's companion for the lowest frequency range is the DVA S30 subwoofer, which is likewise network-ready. This enclosure incorporates 2 powerful 18" woofers in a hybrid horn-loaded bass-reflex enclosure, with a 3 kW amplifier. To learn more about this enclosure, see the Active Subwoofer section.

RDnet lets you

• Monitor levels, limiters and temperatures

• Select system presets

• Configure settings offline (without RDnet needing to be active)

• Mute T-12 or S-30 units

• Mute groups of cabinets.

• Check individual speakers.

• Automatically manage the addresses of system components

• One-touch login on the LAN and USB interfaces

• Network access via a wireless LAN access point

T12: Components of exceptional quality

The dBTechnologies group of companies develops and manufactures its own individual components tailored to each specific project. They don't support the practice of adapting other brands' speakers by adjusting their EQ and impedance parameters to their own standards. On the contrary, it has always been their policy to design and build components from scratch with specifications tailored to deliver the best audio performance in each of their applications.

Take the DVA series, for example: they partnered with the RCF® group to develop speaker components unmatched in their segment. Made from the highest-quality materials, such as Mylar or titanium, and using neodymium magnets, the DVA series components deliver extraordinary performance, high SPL and the lowest possible distortion. They're also surprisingly easy to carry thanks to their low weight.

Constant directivity

The DVA T12 is equipped with a constant-directivity horn, high-frequency drivers and midrange woofers, all optimized to deliver a nominal dispersion angle of 100ºx10º. Apart from the formation of cylindrical waves (highly dependent on the number of T12 elements used), the DVA uses the vector resulting from the sum of the individual horns. This means (if set up correctly) that as the distance from the source increases, the listener will perceive more and more of the vector sum of the individual elements. However, keep in mind that to project sound into a specific area, the correct curvature of the elements is much more important than the number of them used. This is the method for correctly optimizing the effect of SPL distribution.

Top-of-the-line high definition

The 1" neodymium driver incorporates a 1.5" Mylar diaphragm. This allows a fast response and provides great linearity across all frequencies. This driver was specially designed for use in line arrays. Its compact dimensions allow them to be placed very close together, which is a key factor in minimizing interference.

The DVA T12 is loaded with three drivers tuned specifically for the array's horn design. This combination maximizes the coupling of the drivers' outputs and extends the range of the high-frequency signal.

Precise, tremendously efficient midrange response

The DVA T12's two 6.5" neodymium woofers are paired to improve coupling and the response of the most critical midrange frequencies.

The speaker sits inside a sealed housing that provides adequate compression with high sensitivity and excellent acoustic reproduction.

Thanks to its high B.L (magnetic flux factor), the speaker reacts much faster to transients, delivering much greater performance. Both 6.5" woofers are fitted with an optimized phase plug and feed a front-loaded horn, thus achieving a uniform coverage pattern.

Extended performance in the lowest frequency range

A 12" neodymium woofer housed in a bandpass enclosure design covers the low-frequency range. Extremely energetic, it delivers powerful punch down to 60 Hz, giving it "full-range" performance.

The 12" woofer is angled inside the enclosure, making for a slim, unobtrusive design.

Lightweight, tough hybrid polypropylene housing

The DVA T12 enclosure marks a milestone in the development and manufacture of polypropylene cabinets. Its surface is impervious to knocks and scratches, and it's completely resistant to water and humidity. A sophisticated internal bracing system improves the enclosure's strength and resonance behavior.

The DVA T12 also features an internal aluminum frame that connects the components and further reinforces the enclosure mechanically. Thanks to its tremendously tough construction, the enclosure is ready for the harsh world of tours and concerts, offering the highest standard of resistance to rain and the elements.

A rain guard built into the rear panel protects the circuits and connections, so this powered unit can be used in practically any weather conditions.

The Most Cutting-Edge Line Arrays on the Market. This Month: dB TECHNOLOGIES

Horn-loaded bass-reflex enclosure

This sophisticated hybrid design combines the benefits of bass-reflex and horn systems in a compact enclosure designed to perform at low frequencies with high SPL. The two reflectors are arranged in a "V" shape and guide the sound from the bass-reflex channel to the horn port. This smooth, even channeling action considerably increases its reach.

The high-quality multi-ply birch construction is covered with a highly durable black lacquer paint finish and includes 8 carrying handles. To avoid noise, a wheeled transport dolly can be attached to and removed from the back using quick-release pins.

3,000W digipro® G2 Class D power amplifier

Each woofer is powered by a dedicated 1.5 kW digipro®G2 digital power amplifier, providing a total output power of 3,000W. The DVA S30 delivers 50% more effective power than is standard for its class. The high efficiency of digipro® technology makes cooling fans unnecessary.

Because it doesn't use mechanical components that need regular maintenance, this subwoofer is even more reliable. digipro® digital amplifiers are highly advanced, with highly efficient switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) and active power factor correction (PFC). They supply the power needed to deliver maximum performance on dynamic peaks, even when the mains voltage is poor, for example when power drops at concerts due to voltage sags in the grid. digipro® technology also has the great advantage of minimal weight. With the addition of neodymium magnets, the result is a tremendously light and compact unit that's very easy to set up and transport.

3. DVA T4 - 8"/6.5"/1" 420 W

The DVA T4 Top is equipped with a constant-directivity horn for the midrange, offering a nominal dispersion angle of 100ºx15º. The CD horn provides great flexibility and natural sound in cases where, for example, the array isn't correctly curved.

The Most Cutting-Edge Line Arrays on the Market. This Month: dB TECHNOLOGIES

Apart from the formation of cylindrical waves (highly dependent on the number of T4 elements used), the DVA uses the vector resulting from the sum of the individual horns. This means that as the distance from the source increases, the listener will perceive more and more of the vector sum of the individual horns. However, keep in mind that to project sound into a specific area, the correct curvature of the elements is much more important than the number of them used. This is the method for correctly optimizing the effect of SPL distribution.

High safety

In addition to the built-in multiband digital compressor/limiter, the T4 incorporates analog limiters on each way to deliver maximum performance with safe operation. The included DSPs, together with the digital controller, complete the amplifier. Any fault in the 3-way amplifier circuit is detected and only the failing channel is muted, to avoid unnecessary noise. The DSP also monitors the temperature of the power amplifiers. If the preset limits are reached, the amplifier doesn't shut down; the input signal is reduced by 3, 6 or 9 dB depending on the amplifier's status. The system will always remain operational.

Innovative power

The built-in amplifier, weighing just 3 kg, delivers 420W/RMS. Active operation of the T-4's three ways avoids the additional cost of several passive filters. Other advantages of digital amplification are its high efficiency of over 90% and its silent operation, since it doesn't need forced ventilation.

Incredible dynamics

The DVA T4's digital amplifier includes a DPP (Digital Power Processing) device and a Multiband Compressor/Limiter with individual controls for each way. It provides a large reserve of dynamic headroom, with a range of up to 22 dB for mids/highs. Besides its wide dynamics, this innovative device ensures that the signal stays stable even when the system is pushed to its limits. All the features mentioned above are typical of a very high-performance sound system. Both the sonic performance and the system's low weight, just 13.2 kg per DVA T4 array element, represent a major advance in design and technology. The system is easy to handle and quick to set up even in the most complicated situations.

Easy to set up

The DVA T4 incorporates different EQ presets to achieve the right sound reproduction from the array. The presets optimize the mid- and high-frequency response, taking into account air absorption at short, medium and long distances.

Cutting-edge technology

The DVA T4 integrates a switch-mode power supply with PFC. This makes it very light, with efficiency close to 90%, which makes it possible to efficiently power up to 8 DVA T4s from a single 230V/16A feed. The power supply accepts voltages from 85 to 260 VAC, so it will work anywhere in the world, even in the most adverse conditions.
