PRS basses PRS Guitars recently introduced its new SE range of basses, which is completed by two new models: the SE Kingfisher and the SE Kestrel. Both combine what any bassist could want: a vibe reminiscent of music's golden age some years back, while taking advantage of today's most cutting-edge technologies. Getting down to business, let's look at each of the basses. The SE Kingfisher is a designer bass built with an ash body and a 24-fret maple and walnut neck topped with a rosewood fingerboard. Its design, the company explains, provides a great "clanky" sound that is missing from some modern basses. The pickups have separate volume controls with a master tone control, and the hardware includes a Hipshot TransTone bridge as well as Hipshot HB6 tuners. Summing up the rest of the features developed by PRS, we can say: Scale length: 34"; depth at 1st fret: 0.792"; width at nut: 1.591"; width at fingerboard: 2.500"; treble pickup: SE 4B "H" Treble (PRS humbucker); bass pickup: SE 4B "H" Bass; as for controls, it has two volume and one tone, and it can be used with 45-105 gauge strings. Three colors are currently available: natural, scarlet red and Tortoise Shell. Moving on to the other model, the SE Kestrel, and taking a look at its aesthetics, we would describe it as a bass that follows the traditional single-coil bass concept. This second model has an alder body and a 22-fret maple and walnut neck topped with a rosewood fingerboard. The pickups are also made by PRS. Scale length: 34"; depth at 1st fret: 0.792"; width at nut: 1.591"; width at fingerboard: 2.500"; Hipshot HB6 tuners; treble pickup: SE 4B "S" (PRS single-coil); bass pickup: SE 4B "S" Bass; and controls divided by function: two volume controls and one tone control. It will sound perfect with 45-105 gauge strings, and PRS also offers a choice of three colors: black, metallic red and Tri-Color Sunburst.
