With more than 90 years of history, Celestion has always been involved in the most important events and developments. In 1925, Celestion patented one of the first moving-coil loudspeakers, “The Celestion,” and it was during the birth of the rock 'n' roll revolution that the first guitar speaker built specifically for that kind of music was born, the Alnico Blue.
When was your company founded, and what are its business origins?
Celestion started out in 1924 as a small company designing and building speakers for the radio market. The first patented speaker, called “The Celestion,” appeared in 1925. In the 1930s the G12, one of the first speakers with permanent magnets, was built for the first time.
During World War II, the company supplied speakers for public address announcements in factories and on naval ships, and by the early fifties, television was an important market. As rock 'n' roll became popular, the company rose to fame after its speakers were used in the guitar amps of the day, becoming fixtures in products from prestigious brands such as Vox and Marshall.
Today, the company is still renowned for guitar speakers, and it still produces some of the same models that were made in the 1960s.
Later, in the early 2000s, the company stopped making hi-fi speaker cabinets to focus more on designing and manufacturing professional audio speakers and compression drivers.
Today, Celestion is the leading branded supplier of HF compression drivers and coaxial speakers, and one of the world's top five suppliers of LF speakers.
Where can your products be found? In which countries? In which markets?
Celestion speakers can be found all over the world, including Spain and Latin America.
Who are your products aimed at, and what are their main uses?
Our products are aimed primarily at manufacturers. The PA speakers and compression drivers are aimed at makers of sound reinforcement systems. We also design and manufacture dedicated speakers designed specifically for guitar and bass speaker cabinets. There is a real growth area in selling speakers for repair and upgrade through retail distribution, so we expect steady, continuous expansion in this area.
How many divisions or categories do you have? What range do they cover?
We have three different but interconnected product areas. First, Pro Audio speakers and compression drivers for sound reinforcement systems. This includes subwoofers, low-frequency woofers, midrange units and HF compression drivers.
Celestion is also the world's leading supplier of branded coaxial speakers, where the LF and HF signals are produced from the same point source.
In addition, Celestion makes the most famous guitar speakers, with a wide range of products designed to add to and shape the tone of guitar speakers. The best-loved products include the Alnico Blue, Greenback and Vintage 30.
A recent innovation for the company is the production of impulse responses of our guitar speakers. Celestion IRs are compatible for use with modeling and profiling hardware (Fractal Axe-Fx II, Kemper, Atomic Amplifire, Line 6 Helix and others), and digital modeling and emulation technology in the music products industry lets users get a great (digital) guitar tone.
