Real-time spatial audio: The Breakbeat integrates L-Acoustics DJ on a 12.1.4 L-ISA system

The Breakbeat, in Chico (California), is the first venue in the Americas to install L-Acoustics DJ, combined with a full L-ISA immersive system, creating an artistic space that is difficult to categorize.

Some of the boldest ideas in music emerge far from the obvious places. The Breakbeat, which recently opened in downtown Chico, California, is proof of that. The venue occupies a compact former sunglasses store that its founder, Azariah “Z” Reynolds, has transformed into a multifunctional arts and performance space built around the latest spatial audio technology, designed to be as immersive for a folk duo as for a DJ set. Reynolds had a clear vision when he first assessed the space.

I liked the sightlines of the space, the ceiling height, and the overall feel, so I developed a basic concept for how I wanted to organize the room. I wanted to combine a performance space, a visual art area, and a dedicated listening room, he explains.

The name of the venue was also a deliberate choice: “We chose it because it represents beginnings. The breakbeat was one of the first sampled drum rhythms and marked the start of hip-hop and the era of electronic sampling”.

To bring this vision to life, Z turned to Denver-based Brown Note Productions, an L-Acoustics Certified Provider with extensive experience in complex audio installations. What they built together is a venue that far exceeds the expectations of its physical size.

The first L-Acoustics DJ installation in the Americas

At the heart of The Breakbeat is L-Acoustics DJ, the industry’s first complete system for transforming traditional stereo DJ setups into immersive spatial audio experiences, which began shipping in early 2026. Using proprietary Source Separate technology, the system applies low-latency machine learning to split stereo tracks into discrete stems in real time, allowing DJs to position and move those elements through the physical space as they perform. Crucially, this is achieved without interfering with the DJ’s existing workflow.

The Breakbeat is the first venue in the United States to install L-Acoustics DJ. Matt Bauer, Account Manager at Brown Note Productions, worked with the L-Acoustics Applications team to integrate the spatial system, combining an L-Acoustics DJ hardware controller and iPad app with an L-ISA Processor II in a full 12.1.4 surround configuration.

I first heard L-Acoustics DJ last summer and knew it was going to be a hit. But when it came to integrating these new technologies and customizing them for the space, we collaborated with the L-Acoustics team to develop a tailored solution. The final result was better than anyone expected!, says Bauer.

The loudspeaker configuration was designed specifically for the room: an overhead ring of 12 L-Acoustics X8i speakers serves as surrounds, with four X6i above the audience area as overhead channels. Three Syva Sub in a horizontal array behind the stage reinforce the low end, powered by a combination of LA7.16i amplified controllers for the surrounds and subwoofers, and LA2Xi for the overhead speakers. The system runs on Pioneer DJ decks and mixer supplied by BNP, allowing any visiting DJ to start playing immediately.

Immersive sound for all types of artists, not just DJs

What makes The Breakbeat’s technological investment significant is that it goes far beyond DJ performances. In addition to L-Acoustics DJ, the venue operates a full L-ISA Immersive Hyperreal Sound system, meaning non-DJ artists also perform in immersive format. Z’s goal from the start was to create a venue capable of credibly hosting any type of artist, and the system has already been tested across different formats.

“You could see that each type of performance delivered the same level of impact”, says Z. The venue’s early programming included a folk and Americana performance by Willy Tea Taylor and The Sam Chase, which Z describes as “very impressive and full” in immersive surround, followed the next night by Reno-based DJ duo Fox & Buck with Modelody. The reaction in both cases was the same: audiences searching for reference points that weren’t there. “I think people come in expecting what it’s like to hear a stereo image, and to watch an artist perform with sound coming from the stage. But The Breakbeat gives you the fully immersive feeling of being inside the sound. Watching people adapt to that is really interesting”.

The Breakbeat’s 12.1.4 configuration allows stems to move independently around the room, something a standard left-right system cannot do. “It creates a spatial spectrum where no matter where you turn, you get a perfect sound image”, explains Z. “People at our last show asked if we had speakers under the floor or were using vibration effects, but it was just the impact of the Syva Sub in a line behind the stage”.

Inviting artists to explore

A venue built around such new technology carries the implicit responsibility of bringing artists along. Z and The Breakbeat team have embraced this as a core part of the venue’s identity. For DJs performing there for the first time, the learning curve has been designed to be minimal. L-Acoustics DJ requires no prior technical knowledge, yet offers extensive creative possibilities.

The technology is new to the DJs who have played here, but once they got the hang of it, it was quite easy for them to identify parts of their tracks that worked well with each effect and use them confidently. It’s always interesting to see DJs’ reactions the first time they use it, because as soon as they start shaping the sound and using cross effects, the impact is immediate and striking, says Z.

This reaction is exactly what the venue aims to provoke, both in artists and audiences. Bauer summarizes it: “I don’t think there’s another space like The Breakbeat. Everything works together to make it both practical and magical”.
