What is the Meteor Mic? A large-diaphragm (25 mm) condenser microphone. It connects directly to the computer via USB and, according to the manufacturer, needs no drivers on any type of computer. In our case, we used an iMac, which recognized the device without any problem. With a cardioid polar pattern and a smooth frequency response, we get 16-bit samples at a resolution of 44.1/48 kHz.
One of its most surprising aspects is its built-in stand. It consists of three chrome legs (matching the mic) that swivel out to hold the mic upright on the desk, or fold back to cover the Meteor Mic's grille itself. The system is well thought out, since we can adjust each leg to a different angle, so we can place the microphone in exactly the right position for our purpose.
Another interesting strength of this Samson is its good compatibility with any computer and, according to the manufacturer, practically 100% compatibility with almost any digital audio capture platform. At ISP we tested it with Pro Tools. The result was quick and trouble-free.
This little mic includes a USB cable that connects from the back to the computer, and a pleasant black velvet pouch. Right next to the USB socket, we find a stereo headphone output in 1/8" TRS format. On the front of this curious multimedia mic we find the headphone volume control and a button to mute signal pickup.
For quick results in any multimedia application, whether instruments, narration, vocals, home studio or video conferencing, it should be added that it is also compatible with iPhone and iPad. Plug in the USB, fire up GarageBand (or another app) and you're off.
And what about the sound?
We set up a guitarist in the ISP lab with an acoustic guitar. We set up the Shure PG27, Shure PG57 and Samson's Meteor Mic. We recorded several takes with the same guitar in the same spot. Go to www.ispmusica.com and compare the audio references for yourself, judging what you can expect from this modern little guy.
Conclusions
A practical, versatile gadget with quick access to any application.
